The Mother Tree with Talk under light

Project Statement
It is not about trying to be good to save the environment. We are within the living things. In Western culture, we have a word for everything that is not human: nature. In other cultures, there are no such words separating humans from other living and non-living things on the planet. Humans living at a fast pace with their machines are not superior in any way. This project is a declaration of love to our planet Earth, Gaïa, the trees, and all living things. I initiated this project out of a desire to dream of a radically different future—one where no species dominates the Earth, and where discrimination based on gender, origin, culture, or body appearance is erased within the human species. I imagine a world built on smaller communities learning from each other. The results of this project include photos, poems, and videos. From conception to realization and publication, more than a year has passed. Working at a slow pace allows ideas and concepts to expand. We live at such a fast pace now that we cannot handle it without causing damage. Our culture of action and reaction has its limits. It is hard to embrace slowness in our Western world, but allowing for slowness opens new, unexpected doors. I collaborated with Mireia Ibañez, a poet, writer, and translator based in the Delta del Ebre, south of Catalunya. Mireia wrote a tale :"Gaia's thread" about Gaïa sewing herself a fabric made of all living things and all the sounds of the planet. From this tale, she later created a poem, which became part of a video filmed by David Montes using his 16mm analog video camera.
Human beings—and many trees—collaborated in this project. Each person contributed by writing in their own language (Catalan, Spanish, Turkish, and English) about their feeling of being part of Earth's living things. The designer talk under light (@talkunderlight) created pieces for a unisex underwear collection inspired by the project.
Books and authors that nourished this work include Métamorphoses by Emanuele Coccia, Enlivenment: Toward a Poetics for the Anthropocene Manifesto by Andreas Weber and Hildegard Kurt, Éloge de la plante by Francis Hallé, as well as thinkers and scientists like Paul B. Preciado, Vinciane Despret, and Suzanne Simard.
