About.
Solène Milcent (b.1990, Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, France) is a self-taught photographer. She is currently based between Paris, la Vendée in France, and Barcelona in Spain. Her work explores our relationship with ourselves and with other living things. She grew up in a rural area of France with environmental activist parents, at a time when ecological issues were often overlooked. She only discovered photography and art later, after moving to the city to study Marketing.
In 2017, after working in marketing for several years, she decided to leave her job and travel to develop personal photography projects. During her journey—from Iceland to the Mojave Desert in California, and finally Arizona—she kept a diary, combining written reflections with Polaroids. This marked the beginning of her first artistic projects, including Georgia's World. In 2018, back in Barcelona, she presented her first solo exhibition at the Lomography store, showcasing her photographic work, including the Georgia's World series. She also started a new project, In My Room, inspired by Saul Leiter’s work, exploring intimacy and its connection to interior spaces in contrast to the outside world, now published in FishEye Magazine.
Solène Milcent commits to her artistic practice through self-directed learning, drawing inspiration from philosophical readings that shape her vision of life, such as Donna Haraway and Vinciane Despret. She also trained in documentary photography through a masterclass by Zen Lefort at l’EMI (Ecole des Métiers de l’Information, Paris) and pursued coursework at IEFC (Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya).
Her photographic work involves projects around fashion, events, culture, and portraits. She has been featured in sustainable fashion magazines such as Kaltblut Mag, HumanWonder, momo mag. In 2021, she collaborated with Croatian director Ivor Martinic, creating a series of photographs for his play Sería una pena que se marchitaran las plantas. She also has a long-term collaboration with circus artist Aino Ihanaien, from Cirkus Cirkör, documenting the creative process behind her performances and working on the visuals for her shows like Arachne project in 2021. In 2022, she co-directed with Imogen Mansfield her first short film, La Journée des Framboises, for the indie adult film platform XConfessions.
Her current projects explore metamorphosis, transitions, farming and rural culture. With a deep commitment to exploring new ways of thinking, Solène Milcent aims to create new spaces of reflection to navigate our contemporary time, a time of ‘re-placement’ – repositioning humanity within the Earth's tapestry.
