About.
Solène Milcent’s work spans various mediums, including photography, video and performance, weaving together personal narrative, ecological consciousness, and the exploration of our interconnectedness with the natural world. Through a series of personal projects, she has created a body of work that is both photographic and performative, capturing mental landscapes and self-portraits.
A self-taught artist, Solène Milcent (b.1990, Saint Sébastien sur Loire, France) is committing to her art practice by a self-directed learning which include reading and studying contemporary philosophers such as Donna Haraway, Emanuele Coccia, Vinciane Despret, Bruno Latour. To further enrich her practice, she participated in a masterclass focused on Documentary Photography by Zen Lefort at l’EMI (Ecole des métiers de l’information in Paris). Additionally, she pursued coursework at IEFC (Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya). Her artistic approach is tainted by curiosity, a deep sense of humbleness, indeterminacy and unexpected approach, like an organic mater, taking a shape, unfolding, grasping and nourishing herself from inspiring forms. In this process, she often pays homage to the artists and spirits who have added multiple layers to her own inner landscape, such as Georgia O'keefe, Patti Smith, Kiki Smith, Wim Wenders, Alexandra David Neel… Finding reverence for what goes on beyond our bodies, and awareness of the porous nature of all individuals (human and more than human). Nothing really determines where “otherness” begins or ends. Her most prominent work includes a short film written and directed together with her long time artistic partner, Imogen Mansfield, for Erika Lust. La journée des Framboises is an erotic short film inspired by the French new wave, exploring a sensual and honest intimacy between two human beings. Her photographic work can be seen in sustainable fashion magazine like the Earth Issue and Human wonder. Her project "in my room" is published in Fisheye magazine. She has some of her work exhibited at Galerie Joseph le Palais (Paris, France), The Hackney Social (Londres, UK), Museu del Disseny, (Barcelone,Espagne). With a deep commitment to exploring new ways of thinking, Solène Milcent aims to create new spaces of reflection to navigate our contemporary time and the environmental rupture, a time of ‘re-placement’ – repositioning humanity within the Earth's tapestry. |
